Call for Papers: Cybersecurity and Cyberdefence

Special issue of Information & Security: An International Journal (I&S)

Submission of full text papers for the forthcoming issue: 20 October 2013

Anticipated publication: December 2013

Editor: MG (rtd) Koen Gijsbers, General Manager, NATO Communications and Information Agency

Information and communications technologies and networks underpin the functioning of modern societies, drive innovation and competitiveness, connect people and contribute to quality of life. But these developments have a dark side; ill-wishers may act individually, as a group, as a loosely connected network or, at the extreme, with the support of a state. They try to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in the cyberspace and society’s dependencies on the information infrastructure and attack them attempting to discredit a state or an organization, create panic, cause economic loss and/or to profit.

Technologies and methods to attack computer systems and networks constantly evolve, as does the response to cyber threats. Information & Security: An International Journal (I&S) has already addressed the interaction between information technologies and terrorism, cybercrime and cybersecurity, as well as the dialectics of information security and evolving cybersecurity challenges and responses. A number of recent examples of cyber attacks got the attention of most senior decision makers. Research institutes, universities and high-tech companies, along with security services, the military, and dedicated personnel of large public and business organizations seek proper responses to these threats.

The I&S Editorial Board is announcing this Call for Papers to address organizational, procedural and technological aspects of cybersecurity and cyberdefence. We will welcome contributions on methods and tools for:

  • Identification of vulnerabilities in the cyber space
  • Protection of the information infrastructure
  • Detection of cyber attacks
  • Responding to cyber attacks
  • Disaster recovery and consequence management
  • Cyber forensics.

The I&S issue will include also presentations of approaches, methods, models, and tools supporting respective decision-making processes, for instance:

  • How to create a feasible cybersecurity policy?
  • What are the features of an adequate cyberdefence strategy?
  • How to address the challenges of inter-agency and cross-border cooperation?
  • How to organize the protection of cyberspace in view of economic austerity and evolving threats?

Interested authors may submit their papers to the I&S Managing Editor in electronic form, following these instructions. For inquiries, proposals and submissions of book reviews, description of Web sites and related initiatives please addressed the I&S Managing Editor.

Deadline for submission of full text papers for the forthcoming issue: 10 October 2013
